Lake Wales Repeater Association Repeater System

The Lake Wales Repeater is an open repeater. The Repeater is located on a hill 234' ASL within city limits. We use a Spectrum 40-Watt 2 Meter Repeater crystaled for 147.33/93 as pictures show below. Our Repeater is tone capable using 127.3Hz. Wacom cavities and 7/8" hard line feed our DB224 4-bay dipole array with power.the antenna is mounted on a 130' water tower.

To remotely control various functions of the Repeater system, We use a UHF receiver connected a Repeater controller. The controller allows us to toggle the 147.33/93 repeater on tone or disable the Carrier Operated Relay if a problem should arise.

There is emergency power available at this Repeater site.

This Repeater system has given us great service over a number of years. Please, use it! View repeater coverage map.

Lake Wales Repeater Coverage Area

Currently the map below to our old site. We expect better coverage at the new site. Of course over time we will need to determine our new coverage area based on reporting stations with certain configurations. Previously we determined coverage with a 50 Watt mobile with at least a 5/8 wave antenna.

As of April 21, 2008 We are still determining our new repeater coverage. From what we know so far, to our surprise, coverage appears to be exactly the same as when we were at the 'Y' site to our South, East, and Northwest. We are getting some indications that there may be large gains to the North, which was previously a grayish area to be in coverage wise.

Below is a (outdated) map of Polk and surrounding areas that shows typical coverage for the Repeater we support.

When we have special club functions or provide a community service such as the tour of Sebring bike ride, the map give us and idea of what kind of equipment we need to access the Repeater around the County.

Sample signal quality from mobile units with 5/8 wave (or thereabout) antennas, roving around the area accessing the Repeater are observed and plotted.

There are many antennas as shown, but which one is ours? The highest and tallest one of course!

A little bit of history and pride
Much was improved in the early 90's for the L.W.R.A. when Rick WB9IJW was President of our club. He felt we could use some new equipment to replace the ailing gear at the time. Through his hard work over many months in obtaining donations and negotiations with manufacturers, we purchased our first Spectrum (Looks better than the one pictured above), new Cavities, new Antenna, and a nice new shed with air conditioning to house the new gear in. And that was just a few of the items. See the pictures page for more of what the club achieved in the early 90's.
