Feb 16th, 2008 The LWRA picked their pair of tables right by the entrance to the indoor portion of the Annual Highland County 2008 Hamfest. (Up here we still call it the Sebring Hamfest). We only had 7 people from our area attend and of the 7 only 2 had a few items to sell, but none the less they did show their support for the Hamfest by participating. We got there about 8AM, but the Hamfest was in full gear (outside portion) long before (6am to be exact) we showed up. The weather was so nice this year that folks who had purchased tables inside, actually stayed out in the tail gate area. Sam
W4KUM (right) is setting up the only two pieces of gear he had for sale
this time around. Last year we all did our big shack clean out spread over
4 tables, and were successful, so we're a bit dry on 'wares this year. Sam
sold the receiver standing up on end almost right away. Jack K4BYF (Left)
is looking on. From
another angle... Sam W4KUM still setting up, trying to make a speaker work.
Yes, our tables have power to them. Nice facilities here. Bill
Johnson and Howard WB4NYT spotted in the tailgate area. Again, the weather
was perfect for being outside. It beats 26 degrees we had to endure last
year! John
KC4KLM wins the first door prize drawing. A 2007-2008 Repeater Directory
donated to the Hamfest by Cedar City Sales (Ham supply vendor). John recalls
getting to he Hamfest, filling out the two tickets he had in hand, one for
Sam and one for himself. Which ticket number looks like the winning number?
(Ha ha!) John puts both tickets in the drawing bucket for drawings on the
half -hour. Then John goes back over to the LWRA table and says: "There
are not a lot of tickets in the bucket, so we might have a chance at winning
something this time. How right he was!![]() What's this case for? The next four pictures reveal! This little surprise is mixed in with a crowded table of pure junk. Junk that is except for this surprise... Can
you identify this Keyer? It belongs with the box above. It's been around
a while now. Look at the wear on the corner on da-paddle. It got used quite
a lot. The
keyer is a Vibroplex! None
other than Jack K4BYF is the new owner of the Vibroplex keyer! This is what
Jack has to say about his new acquisition:"Turns out that this was a good purchase. The key was built by Vibroplex in 1917 and now sells from $300 to $500. The carrying case is valued at $150. I found out that the key was owned by a man named Bob Russell who was the station master and telegrapher for the B&O RR at Carlyle, IL from 1918 to the 1950's." You don't want to know what give-away price Jack bought it for. Can you believe Jack held off quite a bit on buying, hoping some one else would buy it so we would not have to?
