| ATTENTION
- ALL MEMBERS OF THE LAKE WALES REPEATER ASSOCIATION March 11, 2009 Recently I (Webmaster) have been notified that callsigns and other information that usually appear in a given article on this web site, where credit is due, is being found by search engines, such a as google, which is a normal process. Some member(s) have expressed their concern that their personal information should not be found on the Internet, in such an easy manner, thanks to search engine technology. I have since promptly responded to assure those concerned, that being I am solely responsible for the web content here, and that I must take action as to not trample on anyone's privacy, even though callsigns provided by the FCC are public information. One only needs to go to one of many callsign databases available publicly on the web, type in a call, and obtain far more information than one ever could on the LWRA web site by far. To make all aware and to assure you that something will be done, I wish to share with you all my response to those concerned, about this issue and the steps I have taken to safe guard your information on this web site in the past, however, apparently, not satisfactorily. |

Yes, your call would come up in a search and point to the LWRA.ORG page. When you are mentioned such as what is on the main web page right now "Submitted by NAME OMITTED", a search engine will pickup on OMITED and index that unique text. I do have something called ROBOTS.TXT invoked on the web site. What this is supposed to do is....A search engine comes along and is supposed to look for ROBOTS.TXT first. It reads the contents of the text file and it tells the search engine what the web site owner would like a search engine to look at (folders and files) or to NOT look at. Well, in my ROBOTS.TXT there are some things knocked out for protection reasons already. But 1.> it can't exclude just a word, and 2.> There is absolutely no law saying a search engine must obey the ROBOTS.TXT file. For further protection of member info, I also have the e-mail address that are placed on there in non-text form. They are actually pictures of the e-mail address. Spy bots don't read pictures...They want the easy prey- text. So I have long since done what I could to protect e-mail addresses for years. As you may recall, I used to keep a simplified roster on the site for those wanting to see if they were current on dues. I took the info from the LWRA roster and updated by hand (time consuming) yet, I omitted mailing addresses, e-mail address, and phone numbers with privacy in mind. And so in a general sense I have taken measures to protect information over the years. I do respect anyone wishes to not have their info presented on the net and I do take action accordingly. I have in the past, been asked to not have anyone's info on the LWRA roster itself, and made sure there was no record of that member being a member. To omit your call and name every where, I will need to review 1,175 documents (see attached screen shot picture) pertaining to the LWRA web site, mostly thanks to me keeping a nice archive of articles in the past. You did a lot of work over the years and received credit on many pages. I ask that you grant me a reasonable time, but yet done in a timely manner to make corrections to the website to omit your information. You should also be aware that even after corrections are made, search engines keep a cache of pages for what ever time they determine. I'm sure you have seen some google results that have a link saying 'cached' after the description of the search. So they have your information as well. There are well over 1,500 search engines out there and that was at last count years ago. Probably many more now. I can try and contact them all and ask them for an update to the caching of LWRA.ORG or complete page removal. But with several billion pages on the net and only so much staff, this could take time, so you'd have to bare with them/me.

| What
next? After I replied to the concern, I realized there was something I could do right now, and that is to immediately suspend all content of the LWRA.ORG web site until I contact every search engine company, and go through all 1,175 files and start 'cleaning up' in a manner that I hope will satisfy all. Probably another good idea is to remove any picture that can identify anyone as well while I am at it. Additionally, I will instruct all search engines to not 'index' any page of the LWRA.ORG. Regrettably, this means you or some one new to the area, looking for a local ham club to join will never be able to search for anything LWRA related in the future- once the search engines drop LWRA pages over a good period of time. I would like to deeply apologize to all for any upset I may have caused in trying to promote the LWRA's activities on my dime ($60 a year actually), at the expense of your personal information. |
